Film manufacturer Poligal has invested in Europe’s first Bobst K5000 2850 with AlOx capability to improve the efficiency of its operations in Portugal where BOPP and CPP are produced.

Poligal provides flexible films for consumer products and industrial applications. It has production plants in Spain and Portugal, and a BOPP production capacity of 50,000 tonnes a year and 12.000 tonnes a year of CPP. Capacity will further increase this year to 100,000tpa with a new production plant in Skarbimierz, Poland.

Bobst said the K5000 will help Poligal achieve its ambitious expansion plans, which involve a green field investment and a new BOPP film line in Poland.

With this new equipment, Poligal increases film metallization capacity above 10,000tpa. Poligal has further chosen the K5000 because of its ability to switch rapidly from standard aluminum to AlOx metallizing at the touch of a button.

Bobst said the K5000 2850 with AlOx capability is being supplied in Europe for the BOPP market due to the increasing demand for high barrier transparent film to satisfy consumers’ requirements for product visibility along with a longer shelf life.

Poligal chief operating officer José Luis Doldan said: ‘When we decided to purchase our first metallizer for the Portugal plant we wanted a machine with AlOx production capabilities which was already a proven solution in the market.

‘The Bobst machine has a great reputation as a leader in the AlOx market and with the ability to perform a quick changeover from aluminum to AlOx (and vice versa), this machine is ideal for our requirements.’

In addition to purchasing the K5000 metallizer, Poligal has joined the Bobst integrated AlOx Conversion Project as part of a team of industry members. The objective of the project for Bobst is to develop a full turnkey offering for the conversion of AlOx transparent barrier films. The project has brought together parties from the raw material side (coatings, inks and adhesives), film producers, converters and machinery platform providers (slitters, metallizers, coating machines, printing machine and laminators).

Bobst said Poligal joining the Conversion Project will allow it to make steady progress in the pursuit of a robust AlOx-based product utilizing a polyolefin-based transparent substrate.
